Airline overweight passengerWhen it comes to society and the overweight, there are many negative things that have been said. Some feel that overweight people should not be privy to the same types of benefits that are offered to average sized people. If you were to visit some countries, a person that weighs 250 may be considered thin. The airline industry has certain regulations regarding the seating arrangements for the overweight.

Before Booking a Flight

Check to see if the airline has a policy in forth regarding overweight individuals. Some airlines will charge you for two seats. Is this fair? No. On the other hand, is it fair for the person that is seating next to an overweight person to be uncomfortable? So, to avoid an uncomfortable situation, call ahead so that you are aware of the procedures that the airlines use. Try to use the airlines that do not have a policy in force.

Limit the Size of Carry On Luggage

Each airline has a specific guideline regarding the number and size of luggage that can be taken on the airplane. If you just take one bag with you that has everything that is needed while in flight, this will make things more comfortable for you. It will not be a reason to search through several bags to get what you need. Most flights are short in duration, so you probably will not need any personal items. Things like chewing gum or mints can be tucked away in the pockets of your clothes.

Choose the Last Seat in the Aisle

If you chose a seat that does not have another seat in back of it, you will probably be more comfortable. People in front of you will adjust the seat for maximum comfort but it may not be comfortable for you. To eliminate some of the challenges of the seating arrangements, you can always ask to be moved to the last seat in the isle if it is available. The most important thing is to be able to enjoy your flight in comfort.

St Johns Virgin IslandsSt. John is a small tropical island in the US Virgin Islands. Two-thirds of the island has been designated as a United State National Park. Due to the National Park designation, development is confined to certain areas and many of the islands best beaches are still pristine. You will find the best beaches along the island’s north shore, where every single beach looks to be directly from a post card.

Getting There

Its take a bit of work in order to travel to St. John. Most travelers will fly into Cyril E. King airport on the nearby island of St. Thomas. A quick taxi ride to the Charlotte Amalie downtown ferry docks or a longer ride to the Red Hook ferry docks is in order after you land. Once you are at one of the ferry docks you can board a ferry for St. John. The ferry’s run approximately every hour during the busy season (December to April). The ferry will be a nice departure from your hours of flying and will have you in Cruz Bay St. John in no time. If you’re travelling from Charlotte Amalie, expect a 30-45 minute ferry ride, Red Hook is much shorter, averaging around 15 minutes.

What to do

Travelers will find numerous outdoor activities available to them, from hiking on the many trails in the national park to SCUBA diving with Low Key Watersports. However, most visitors are perfectly content lounging on the beautiful unspoiled beaches on the north shore of St. John. Trunk Bay is the most popular beach and is often very crowded. I suggest you continue north to Cinnamon Bay or Maho Bay where the beach is just as gorgeous and is much less crowded. Whatever you do, enjoy your time in St. John, it is a very special place and the memories will last you a lifetime.

There are many airlines that offer good ways to find the seat you want. For example some might offer you early arrival pick meaning when you arrive you will be asked to pick from the seats left so the earlier you are the better seat you have. Also you could fly with an airline that does not have assigned seating. That way when you get on the plane you have a choice on where you have your flight regardless of the amount you paid for you ticket.

Fly with a child

This helps in many ways to if you have a child with you most of the time when you ask someone to please move over or trade you seats they will just because the fact that you have a younger one with you that you need to take care of. If that doesn’t help you always have the chance to board first when you are with a child on any flight.

Fly first class

When you fly first class you can always get a really nice seat even if it’s not the one you were looking for. It would be much better than seating in between two people at the back of the plane next to the stinky restroom. Who knows you might even meet someone you idolize.

Last resort

If it comes right down to it and you can’t get a good seat just sit down anywhere and wait it out. When the seat belt sign goes off you can pretend to use the restroom and when you come back there is a chance the person you were sitting by will not want to get up to let you back in, he or she might just slide into your seat leaving the better one open for you.

Travelling with a Continuous Positive Air Pressure machine can be frustrating the first time you try it, so the best thing to do is to bring all of your paperwork with you.

  • Bring your prescription from your doctor proscribing CPAP therapy, and make sure your name matches the name shown on your identification.
  • If you’ve gotten married or changed your name, bring proof of that legal change as well.
  • Go online and track down any information from your airline carrier regarding their regulations regarding medical equipment. If their website does not mention medical devices, email their customer service asking for specific instructions on what you should do to bring your cpap on board.

Being able to have written proof of their regulations to show at the airport will be important if you end up dealing with a customer service agent or TSA baggage handler who is unfamiliar with travelers who have CPAP machines.

Pack your CPAP

The best way to travel with your CPAP machine is to buy a CPAP carrying case, if you don’t already have one. Transit can be rough, and if the CPAP is in a suitcase with something heavy, or in an unpadded case, it may get broken. Keep your CPAP travel bag separate from your other luggage as you will need to set it out separately when going through security so additional tests can be performed on it. FAA regulations ensure that CPAP therapy patients with up to date prescriptions are allowed one extra carryon bag when travelling with their CPAP, so try not to overload your CPAP bag with other items so that it is clear that that is what the bag is for.

Breathe Easy

Travelling with a CPAP machine is not as hard as you might think! Most security personnel are well trained and know exactly what it is and what to do with your machine, making the documentation mostly there for your own peace of mind!

When you are considering a trip to Hungary, you are doing yourself a disservice if you confine yourself solely to Budapest, as many travelers do. While Budapest has many beautiful sites and historic sites, traveling around Hungary during your trip is desirable because it is relatively easy and cheap.

Pecs

Pecs, a city in southern Hungary, is a five hour bus ride from downtown Budapest. It is one of the older cities in Hungary, and is a bastion of Turkish architecture and old Roman ruins from centuries before. It is also the education capital of Hungary and hosts the oldest university in the country. The town is renowned for its beauty, and filled with beautiful mosques, baths, ruins and museums.

Up The River

Esztergom is a short ferry ride from Budapest and is known for its ancient palaces and churches. The first king of Hungary was born here. Visegrad is also along the river near Esztergom, and holds an old fortress poised on a cliff high above the water. Tourists must hike to get up to the fortress, and they can also visit an old Roman town hall in the city. Szentendre is a short boat ride away, and walking on its cobblestoned streets and viewing its ancient buildings are like stepping back into the Middle Ages. All three cities can be visited in one day, and all are well worth the travel.

Lake Balaton

Lastly, Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Europe, and it is only a three hour train ride away from Budapest. Lake Balaton is a mineral lake that is sparkling blue and absolutely gorgeous. Lining its coasts are ancient towns, some of which were founded in the Roman period. Hiking along some of the peninsulas jutting into the lake, you stumble upon ruins from many different eras. Plus, in the summer, the waters make an amazing swim.

Next time you plan a vacation to Hungary, instead of sticking to Budapest, you should take day trips and explore these amazing places. The metro in Budapest connects you to the train and bus terminals that go to the other cities, and you can buy tickets on the spot for good prices. Not only will you get to see more sites during your trip, but you will be able to learn more about the history and culture of Hungary as it pertains to the whole country, not just the capital. Traveling in these places also enables you to meet more locals and really get to know the people of this beautiful country.
