St. John is a small tropical island in the US Virgin Islands. Two-thirds of the island has been designated as a United State National Park. Due to the National Park designation, development is confined to certain areas and many of the islands best beaches are still pristine. You will find the best beaches along the island’s north shore, where every single beach looks to be directly from a post card.
Getting There
Its take a bit of work in order to travel to St. John. Most travelers will fly into Cyril E. King airport on the nearby island of St. Thomas. A quick taxi ride to the Charlotte Amalie downtown ferry docks or a longer ride to the Red Hook ferry docks is in order after you land. Once you are at one of the ferry docks you can board a ferry for St. John. The ferry’s run approximately every hour during the busy season (December to April). The ferry will be a nice departure from your hours of flying and will have you in Cruz Bay St. John in no time. If you’re travelling from Charlotte Amalie, expect a 30-45 minute ferry ride, Red Hook is much shorter, averaging around 15 minutes.
What to do
Travelers will find numerous outdoor activities available to them, from hiking on the many trails in the national park to SCUBA diving with Low Key Watersports. However, most visitors are perfectly content lounging on the beautiful unspoiled beaches on the north shore of St. John. Trunk Bay is the most popular beach and is often very crowded. I suggest you continue north to Cinnamon Bay or Maho Bay where the beach is just as gorgeous and is much less crowded. Whatever you do, enjoy your time in St. John, it is a very special place and the memories will last you a lifetime.
