Getting a flight upgradeFlying through the great blue skies of the World isn’t cheap, and sure it isn’t cheap to fly in first class either.    Yes, we all want to fly in first class, but a lot of us either are smart enough not to purchase the tickets, or not lucky enough to have someone purchase them for us.

So, what happens if you want to get a complimentary upgrade to first class, can it be done?  Absolutely!  Let me show you some tips that can increase your chances of landing a complimentary airline upgrade.

  • Join the frequent flyer program: If you haven’t done so already, I would advise that you join your airline’s frequent flyer program.  Here, you’re going to get awarded for every mile you fly, and it’s going to show your loyalty to the airlines.  Most airlines don’t charge, so it doesn’t hurt to sign up.
  • Upgrade your flight: If you’re already part of a frequent flyer program, you may want to just look at how many miles you already have.  You may realize that you have enough to cash in for a free flight, or upgrade to first class.  If that’s the case, do it ahead of time to save money, and fly in class.
  • Get to the airport early: If you’ve looked at your points, or you don’t have a flyer card, that’s okay.  You can still test your luck by getting on the first class list.  You can simply ask the attendant at the counter to put your name on the first class waiting list.  If there’s room, they will consider you when everyone is about to board the plane.
  • Be nice: This sounds awfully simple, but it works.  You don’t want to be a jerk when you’re asking to be upgraded.  By raising a fuss, or complaining, you will find out that the attendant would rather award the upgrade to someone else, rather than you.

The next time you want to get a simple airline upgrade, try these tips, and see how they can work out for you.
