Travelling can be expensive in today’s world especially if you have a family or you find yourself at the airport a lot visiting family and friends.  Well all of us like to save money, right?  There are many things that people pass over when it comes to saving on airline flights and other travel expenses.  Let’s take a look at how you can cut back your travel expenses.

Look into an airline credit card

An airline credit card is more than just a travel based card.   It’s going to allow you to get enough points for free hotel rooms, flights and more.  The thing I like about them the most is that many of these cards team up with major retailers to give you exclusive discounts every time you swipe your card.  There are plenty of these cards on the market, so make sure you do your homework before you apply for one.

Always look for coupons before buying

Whenever I book a flight or vacation, I always look for coupon codes online.  For example, if I’m going to rent a car, I check out at least 6 online car rental companies and see who has the cheapest rate.  Once I find the cheapest rate, I will input a search online the lines of  “[insert car rental company name here] coupon codes”.  You’ll be amazed at what comes up.  I’ve saved over 35% sometimes.  Try this with the airlines, car rental companies and hotels.

Try and book direct

When you use online services like Travelocity and Orbitz, don’t book through them because they are going to most likely charge you a booking fee.  Instead, find the airline, hotel or whatever you’re looking for and go directly to their website.  When you go to book a ticket or room, you’ll find that the company website itself is going to be a lot cheaper than the third party agent.

Always look for package deals

When you book a vacation package together, you’re going to find that this is a great way to save.  Say you want to book a hotel, car rental and airline.  Try third party agents when doing a search like this and see what kind of discounts come up.

Try out the discount travel sites

Site like TravelZoo are amazing when it comes to discount travelling.  If you don’t know where you want to go with your family, try out this site to get some great ideas.  I’ve seen cruises as cheap as $299 a person and plane tickets as low as $50.  The only downfall is sometimes you have to book within a few months.

Try out some of these tips the next time you want to go on a vacation.  Implementing these tips alone will hopefully save you more than 20%.  Even if you’re spending $1000, that’s $200 that can go toward something other than your travel related expenses.
